Process Engineering Manager

Our Manufacturing division is growing, and we are looking for a dynamic Process Engineering Manager to lead the technical manufacturing capabilities across internal and external manufacturing. The ideal candidate has a chemical and biological background with extensive experience in plant operations and project management. This is a highly visible role that will be the Elemental Enzymes technical subject-matter-expert (SME). The Process Engineering Manager will develop the engineering and manufacturing asset capabilities and will manage the manufacturing capital investment portfolio at Elemental Enzymes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create a long-term strategy for developing Elemental Enzymes engineering capabilities and manufacturing asset capabilities, while setting tactical and operational priorities to translate the strategy into action.
  • Create operational plans and performance metrics to ensure plans are on target.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimize manufacturing processes and equipment, improve safety and quality, and reduce costs.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on manufacturing unit operations as well as serve as the technical lead on improving equipment reliability.
  • Lead technical root cause problem solving at internal and external manufacturing sites.
  • Improve efficiency by analyzing layout of equipment, workflow, assembly, methods, and work force utilization. Use lean manufacturing and Six Sigma tools to drive solutions.
  • Identify equipment needed to produce specific products.
  • Recommend process changes to improve safety, quality, and process reliability and robustness while driving down costs.
  • Estimate costs related to layout design, including equipment and materials, labor, etc.
  • Manage the manufacturing investment portfolio plan and project cashflow.
  • Lead complex engineering projects, including process design, equipment design, and installation.
  • Evaluate projects and perform project finance evaluations, such as, ROI, NPV and IRR calculations to justify project drivers.
  • Develop project plans, including scope, budget, timeline, and resource requirements.
  • Manage project budgets, track spending, and ensure adherence to financial targets and create communication plans to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Operations, Safety, Quality, Regulatory, Process Development, and R&D to ensure project requirements are met.
  • Identify and mitigate project risks, ensuring projects are delivered safely and in compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with vendors and equipment suppliers, ensuring timely delivery of equipment and services.



  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering and/or in a Bioprocessing field is required. Master’s degree in Engineering or Masters in Business Administration (MBA) is highly preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in a chemical and/or biotechnology production environment is required with a minimum of 7+ years of process/plant engineering, with a focus on project management, process engineering, and plant operations.
  • Strong technical background in manufacturing processes, equipment, and automation.
  • Experience with upstream process (USP) unit operations, including fermentation, and downstream processing (DSP) unit operations highly desired.
  • Experience with chemical synthesis unit operations, including Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis (SPPS), highly desired.
  • Proven experience in leading complex engineering projects from concept through commissioning and ramp-up.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to develop project plans, manage budgets, and track spending.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to identify and mitigate project risks.
  • Experience in lean manufacturing and six-sigma is a must.
  • Experience with statistical analysis, including statistical process control (SPC) is highly desired.
  • Experience working in a process safety management (PSM) site is highly desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive continuous improvement initiatives and optimize manufacturing processes and equipment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Must be able to work on the production floor and at all levels within the organization.
  • Must be willing to travel, up to 25%.
