Description

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) invites applications for a teaching-track faculty position. We are seeking candidates who can teach graduate and undergraduate courses in artificial intelligence and machine learning as relevant to mechanical engineering. Ideal candidates will also be able to teach a broader selection of courses, such as in the areas of mechanics, dynamics, controls, design, or manufacturing. We are seeking candidates who can incorporate both theoretical as well as practical, project-based pedagogical elements in these courses.

The expected teaching responsibility is the equivalent of six full courses per year (three each semester). In addition, you will advise students, and serve on department, college, and university committees, among other activities as required of all faculty members. Some teaching track faculty members, who carry out significant administrative functions, may teach one to two fewer courses than the full load.

Our mission is to inspire and educate the next generation of engineers and to conduct engineering science and technology research that addresses important societal challenges. We strive to accomplish this mission with the highest dedication to quality, integrity, and respect for others. We are particularly interested in applicants who are committed to and have a passion for a culturally diverse environment and who demonstrate an eagerness to strengthen the culture of inclusivity at CMU. We are actively and purposefully committed to considering a diverse applicant pool in terms of gender, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, and disability. CMU seeks to meet the needs of dual-career couples and is a member of the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC), which assists with dual-career searches.

The Mechanical Engineering department consists of approximately 40 faculty, 450 undergraduate students, and 450 graduate students. We have a dynamic, growing, and diverse faculty who create a cultivating and energetic environment for students to engage in coursework and research in both traditional and non-traditional domains. A new world-class building with state-of-the-art research and educational facilities opened as the home for Mechanical Engineering in the summer of 2023.

Carnegie Mellon University has a well-established teaching-track faculty line.  Teaching-track faculty enjoy the full set of privileges and responsibilities that tenure-track faculty enjoy. Teaching-track faculty are fully integrated into all departmental activities and they are strongly represented in department leadership positions. They benefit from the same professional development opportunities that other faculty do, including mentorship from more senior faculty. They receive the same support for their courses (teaching assistants and resources to develop new materials) as other faculty. Teaching-track faculty members have opportunities to conduct research or engage in other activities that advance them professionally, provided those activities are consistent with the department’s overall educational mission. An Assistant Teaching Professor is initially appointed to a three-year term and then follows a reappointment and promotion process using criteria focused primarily on teaching.  Teaching-track faculty are not eligible for tenure. If they are promoted to the level of Associate Teaching Professor, they can be indefinitely re-appointed in five-year terms. They may also be promoted to the highest rank of Teaching Professor.

Instructions to Apply: Your application should include:

  • A cover letter.
  • Your curriculum vitae.
  • A teaching statement of no more than four pages outlining both your experience and philosophy as well as a list of CMU Mechanical Engineering undergraduate and graduate courses that you are interested in teaching.
  • A diversity statement of no more than two pages, outlining how you have contributed to and plan to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

You should also request 4-5 professional references via the Interfolio system.

Please visit http://apply.interfolio.com/130883 to submit an application.

Applications should be submitted as a single PDF document, except for the letters of recommendation, which should be requested individually through the confidential letter request function in Interfolio. You may wish to send an email to each of your letter writers to alert them that they will receive an automated email from Interfolio requesting that they upload their letter of recommendation. The automated Interfolio emails are sometimes mistaken for spam.

Review of applications will begin immediately and all applications received by December 1, 2023 will be given full consideration. We encourage you to submit early. Paper applications will not be accepted. Women and members of traditionally underrepresented minority groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
