For us, it all starts at the farm, which is why we support and invest so much into preserving our farmers' legacies and ensuring their futures. This is why we offer unique member services, business-enhancing programs and innovative product strategies — to give our farmers an active role in their futures and the future of dairy.
Even beyond the dairy case, we provide opportunities for rural communities to thrive, bring nourishment to those in need and preserve our natural resources through ongoing sustainability innovations. And of course, we're forever linked to many of life's best memories, like baking cookies in grandma's kitchen or eating that first melty ice cream cone of the summer.
Company History
DFA is an organization of local, family farmers from across the country, which means that we're owned by the family farmers we passionately serve. Divided into seven geographic Areas, our grassroots structure ensures every farmer-owner is represented through elected farmer-leaders at all levels of Cooperative governance. This grassroots structure is overseen by a 48-member Board of Directors.
DFA was formed in 1998 through the merger of four dairy cooperatives:
Southern region of Associated Milk Producers Inc.
Mid-America Dairymen Inc.
Milk Marketing Inc.
Western Dairymen Cooperative Inc.
Consolidation was occurring at a rapid pace throughout the industry – as more and more processors merged, the farmer-owners of four regional dairy cooperatives agreed that they would be able to accomplish more by working together with a national presence.
Leadership from each cooperative came together to address the needs of producers across the country and to give dairy farmers a fair voice in national policymaking.
